You cannot see all the forces on the battlefield.
You can see the EFFECTS of their presence and recent activities.

  • The battle has been waged since before the foundation of the world and will continue until the devil is thrown into hell's fires.
  • Jesus Christ has won the victory for us upon the cross and out of an empty tomb! But the battle still rages, and will escalate as our enemy sees his time growing shorter.
  • Our main enemy's forces are spiritual in nature, but he also has many human children doing his bidding, unwittingly or not. Otherwise, why would we be encouraged to feed our "enemy" when he is hungry?

  • And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! • ...it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. (2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 NKJV)
  • ...the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (II Peter 3:7-13 NKJV)
  • ...fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where... they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:9-10 NKJV)
  • Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:24-26 NKJV)
  • Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NKJV)
Sergeant's Notes
  • This war does not have a cease-fire, or even a lull in the battle. Even if you are not directly under enemy fire at the moment, you are still on the battlefield.
  • You are a threat to the enemy. He will attack you, when necessary.
  • If you attack him, he will attempt to distract you from his main effort, misdirect you into a useless effort, then diminish and isolate you. If you don't resist him, he will bypass you, separate you from friendly forces (your family, your local church, your community), and harass your supply lines (your prayer-life and your faith).
  • Remember, we fight as a TEAM. Report all enemy contact to higher AND to the other soldiers on your flanks.
  • We cannot destroy our enemy. But we can destroy his works by manifesting our Savior's life in our daily life.

Interpretive Note: The green and blue columns are not intended to completely separate the physical from the spiritual. Rather only to emphasize one or the other. For example, peace demonstrated in our conduct... as opposed to a spiritual peace within. One influences the other, and vice versa. Most certainly, it is not my intent to neglect or diminish the value of the fruit of the Spirit.

Cosmic Spiritual Battlefields, the Physical Realm, and Humanity

The Scriptures reveal the ongoing conflict between the forces of good and evil, transcending the boundaries of the physical realm. It involves a spiritual struggle that stretches from before the foundation of the world to the culmination of time. In various biblical passages, we catch glimpses of this epic saga, witnessing the interplay between divine sovereignty, the redemptive work of Christ, and the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom:

  1. Predestination and the Redemption Plan: In Ephesians 1:3-4, we discover that God, in His infinite wisdom and love, before the foundation of the world, He chose and called us to be part of His redemptive purposes. This assurance gives us confidence that our lives have a higher purpose and that we are part of God's eternal plan. This predestination reveals His foreknowledge and the divine purpose of salvation. Similarly, 1 Peter 1:19-21 reminds us that Christ's sacrificial death was foreordained before the foundation of the world, accomplishing redemption for all who believe in Him.
  2. The Eternal Purpose and Hidden Wisdom: Titus 1:1-3 unveils the eternal purpose of God, promising hope of eternal life even before time began. 1 Corinthians 2:7-10 further illuminates the mystery of God's hidden wisdom, ordained before the ages, which was revealed through the person of Jesus Christ. This divine wisdom was concealed from the rulers of this age, leading to their unwitting participation in the crucifixion of the Lord of glory. As believers, we have access to this divine wisdom through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, empowering us to discern spiritual truths and navigate the cosmic battlefields.
  3. Unveiling God's Wisdom through the Church: Ephesians 3:8-12 emphasizes the role of the Church in making known the manifold wisdom of God to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. Through the redemption found in Christ Jesus, believers gain boldness and access to God, becoming instruments through which His wisdom and glory are displayed.
  4. Deliverance from Darkness and Overcoming Evil: Colossians 1:13-14 reveals how God, through His Son, delivers us from the power of darkness and transfers us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. 1 John 3:8b emphasizes that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, offering hope and liberation to those who believe. The work of Christ on the cross was not only a demonstration of His love and sacrifice but also a decisive blow against the powers of darkness. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, offering deliverance, freedom, and victory to all who put their faith in Him. Luke 10:17-18 portrays the authority bestowed upon believers to overcome the power of the enemy, symbolized by Satan falling like lightning from heaven.
  5. The Spiritual Warfare: Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not merely against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. This battle extends beyond the physical realm, necessitating spiritual vigilance and reliance on God's strength. We are equipped with the armor of God, including truth, righteousness, faith, and the Word of God, enabling us to stand firm and overcome the enemy's schemes.
  6. End Times and Final Judgment: The Scriptures depict the final judgment and the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom. Revelation 12:7-12 unveils a heavenly war between Michael and his angels against the dragon, identified as Satan, who is cast down to the earth. In 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10, we learn that when the Lord Jesus is revealed, He will bring justice and punishment upon those who reject Him. Furthermore, 2 Peter 3:7-13 portrays the eventual dissolution of the heavens and the earth, leading to the establishment of new heavens and a new earth.
  7. The Eternal Perspective: Despite the challenges and trials we face in the physical realm, we are encouraged not to lose heart. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 reminds us that although our outward circumstances may be temporary and filled with afflictions, the inward renewal of our spirits leads to an eternal weight of glory. We are called to fix our eyes on the unseen realities, trusting in God's promises and the everlasting victory that awaits us.

These Scriptures encompass the grand narrative of God's redemptive plan, from before the foundation of the world to the end of time. We are called to embrace our roles as ambassadors of God's kingdom in the physical realm. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to shine the light of Christ, spread the Gospel, and participate in the ultimate triumph over evil. Let us walk in faith, equipped with the spiritual armor, and trust in God's promises as we navigate these battlefields, knowing that our eternal victory is secure through the blood of the Lamb.
